About Groot Rotterdams Atelier Weekend

From Crooswijk to Coolhaven, from Hillevliet to Hillegersberg, throughout Rotterdam, artists are opening their doors for one weekend to everyone!

About GRAW

Groot Rotterdams Atelier Weekend (GRAW) is a foundation with Cultural ANBI status that organizes a unique event on the third weekend of September, where we open the doors to the studios of Rotterdam artists, makers, and creatives. During this weekend, art lovers, local residents, collectors, and curious visitors can take a peek into the creative workspaces, with the aim of promoting and strengthening the local art scene.

What we stand for

Our mission is to bridge the gap between artists and the public and to celebrate the cultural richness of Rotterdam. We believe that art should be accessible to everyone and that direct interaction with artists enhances appreciation for it. Our vision is that we must cherish the creative and artistic capital of the city to preserve the unique energy that makes Rotterdam so special.

Our goal is to make the creative process and the unique character of the workplaces of autonomous artists, creatives, and makers in Rotterdam accessible to a broad audience. We strive to showcase and celebrate the diversity and creativity of the Rotterdam art community, and to strengthen the connection between artists, creatives, makers, and the community. How we work to make a difference

GRAW has become a symbol of attention and appreciation for the places where artists in Rotterdam work. During these two days, you get a behind-the-scenes look at the studios and experience the versatility and creativity of our city. At the same time, the weekend highlights the challenges many artists face, such as the disappearance of long-established studio complexes that are not being replaced or are only temporarily replaced. Through the GRAW Collective, we focus on the urgent issue of affordable workspaces for creatives in the city. Together with various stakeholders, we are engaging in city-wide discussions to develop future-proof solutions. Our goal is to ensure that enough affordable spaces remain available so that artists and makers can continue to contribute to the unique character of Rotterdam. These creatives play a crucial role in keeping neighborhoods vibrant, creating places full of wonder and inspiration, and strengthening Rotterdam as a lively and attractive city.

Supervisory Board

GRAW is supported by a dedicated Supervisory Board, which oversees our activities and ensures that we pursue our mission responsibly. The members of our Supervisory Board are:

  • Siobhan Burger (Chair)
  • Caroline Pietermaat
  • Annemieke van Wegen-Delhaas
  • Elten Kiene
  • Piet de Jonge

How we started

The COVID-19 crisis made it difficult for artists to present their work in 2020. In response to the restrictive measures, Piet de Jonge sought opportunities to overcome these challenges. The Droom en Daad foundation made it financially possible through a generous donation. By opening so many locations simultaneously, it became possible for everyone to discover art in their own neighborhood. Over the years, interest from visitors has grown significantly, demonstrating a strong need to bring the art world of Rotterdam closer to the public.

Become a supporter

Do you also celebrate and appreciate the value of art and culture in the city? GRAW has now become a charitable organization, recognized as a Cultural Public Benefit Organization (ANBI), and welcomes supporters of our mission. A donation to an ANBI is exempt from inheritance and gift taxes. Supporting our organization can therefore be fiscally advantageous. Your donation provides tax benefits, as you may deduct 125% of your donation from your income tax return. For more information: tax authorities.

Together, we can contribute to the cultural landscape of Rotterdam. Whether big or small, every donation makes a difference and can be transferred to NL65RABO0198190352 in the name of Stichting Groot Rotterdams Atelier Weekend, stating ‘one-time donation.’
